This post addresses a subject many patients ask about at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry: what exactly are porcelain veneers, and how are they used?
Veneers are thin shells made from durable, translucent porcelain or composite resin. They are custom-made for each patient, and fit over the teeth to improve their appearance.
Unlike a dental crown, which covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, a veneer covers just the front. They are typically used to cover flaws in the teeth, such as chips, stains, cracks, or teeth that are slightly crooked.
Since a very thin layer of the enamel on the teeth has to be removed so the veneer can be set, this is usually irreversible.
People who are blessed with naturally healthy smiles may like to show them off, but they may not realize just how lucky they are. For those with flaws, the simple act of smiling can make them self-conscious. Porcelain veneers are an ideal solution.
