For millions of Americans, dental anxiety is a very real thing. As many as twenty percent of adults – and that’s one out of every five – cope with anxiety so bad, they avoid going to the dentist entirely. And that is a serious matter, because they are putting their dental health at risk. If you are among this group, the sedation options provided by Bill Dorfman DDS at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry may be just what you need.
The reasons people are gripped with dental anxiety are varied. But common issues include fear of injections, and the fear of the after effects of injections. Sometimes people without dental anxiety dismiss it as irrational, but to those coping with it, it is very real indeed. That is how we view it at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry.
We offer our patients three options: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation.
- Nitrous oxide. You probably know this as “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than a hundred years. It may or may not make you laugh, but it is safe and effective. It also wears off quickly.
- Oral conscious sedation. This is a sedative, in pill form. You take it an hour or so before your scheduled procedure. It does not usually make patients sleep. But it will make you very drowsy. You’re likely to slur your words, and you won’t be very aware of what’s going on around you.
- IV Sedation. This, as its name indicates, is a sedative that is administered intravenously. It will make you sleep, and when you wake up your dental work will be finished.
All of the dentists at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry are fully trained in sedation dentistry. Throughout any procedure, we monitor each patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels.
Skipping checkups and cleanings puts your dental health at risk. Sedation dentistry is valuable, because it can get you into the dentist’s chair when your instincts may be to avoid it. Better to have a little help getting through your procedure than getting a mouth full of cavities, or worse.
