Leap Foundation

Leap ParticipantsToday I’m going to tell you about a project that I’ve been working on for the past 7 years that I’m extremely proud of and happy to share with the world: Leadership Excellence Accelerating Potential, also known as the LEAP Foundation.

The LEAP foundation is a foundation that focuses on guiding youth onto the right path in life, whether that be in academic, professional, or personal endeavors.

Growing up, I was blessed to have a supportive family, but we were by no means “well off.” When I was accepted into UCLA, I was able to pay for school through the Alumni scholarship. So I know how important it is to spread goodwill and charity firsthand.

Through this great opportunity, I was able to pursue my lifelong career goal of helping others through general and cosmetic dentistry. You may be surprised, but I was enamored by dentistry and its potential to help others from a very young age.

When I was a younger I had to undergo cosmetic dental surgery to correct my smile after getting in an accident – as youngsters are known to do. After the experience I realized how important my smile is to me and how important smiles are to everyone – both physically and psychologically. From that point forward it was my goal to be able to do what these amazing doctors had done for me.

A little later on in my academic life, I was lucky enough to have Mrs. Klehmet as a teacher in high school where I learned another invaluable lesson: the importance of giving back to the community. My situation was by no means luxurious growing up, but I was not quite aware of how little many others in neighboring communities really had. From then onwards, her words stuck with me to this day, “If we don’t leave this world a better place for having been there, then what’s the sense in having been there?”

Fast forward to 2008 and I still had this amazing quote at the forefront of my mind when my good friend and fellow entrepreneur Steve Anderson and I launched LEAP for the very first time at UCLA.

That summer, we were able to pick up where traditional schooling fell short: real life skills – everything from job interview etiquette to money management to mentorship and more. At LEAP we focus on the things that young adults need in the world today in such an incredibly competitive and diverse world that aren’t given enough time in many traditional classrooms 7 years ago or today.

We craft these lessons with some of the best minds in education, and we distribute them through some of the most charismatic and memorable motivational speakers. A lot of the value comes from these speakers themselves – with such an important message you really need inspirational people to share this knowledge. And they’re not just celebrities either. We gather industry-leading professionals from all over the US to share their mentorship, wisdom, and the keys to their success every year.

From that first year with 97 students in the program we have grown to over 500 students! We have also succeeded in providing full financial assistance to over 60% of the program’s participants every year.

We also thrive on the feedback of our program’s participants and last year our feedback was overwhelmingly positive with 95% reporting confidence in study skills and 91% reporting As and Bs in their own courses. 94% of our participants also feel confident that they are able to project professionalism in job interviews.

I’m glad I’m able to make a positive impact in so many of our youths’ lives. If you know anyone between 15 and 24 who would benefit from a week of cultivation, motivation, and fun with some of the world’s leading motivators, entrepreneurs, and mentors, discover the LEAP foundation here: http://leapfoundationusa.org/ today! We’re still accepting applications for 2013’s August program, so don’t delay!

A New Year For A New You

Cosmetic Dentistry in Beverly Hills Leads To A New YouI love the New Year because every time we hit that magical date, it’s like we’ve shed a layer of time from our lives. It’s the perfect opportunity to set goals for yourself, whether they are financial, emotional, or physical, bettering yourself for the New Year is the best time of the year to add positivity to your life. Here are some great ideas and goals for the beginning of the year that you can get behind.

Budgeting: Money isn’t the key to happiness, but our lives can become a lot easier and less stressful if we aren’t living paycheck to paycheck. That isn’t an option for some, but for many of us, some simple budgeting can give us more control over our lives and help to alleviate payday anxiety and stress. There are numerous budgeting apps that you can sync with your bank account to always keep tabs on what your money is doing. Some organization and preparation can go a long way in a year.

Weight loss: We always hear about this one – people show up in full force at the gym on January 1st, and after that they begin dropping like flies. Gym regulars see the cycle in action on a yearly basis. Let’s turn to our technology for guidance and set ourselves a schedule for success. There are tons of apps out there for iPhone and Android that are dedicated to helping you reach your fitness goals, including some that will actually guide you to eventually becoming a 5k runner. There are also many others to help keep nutrition logs that are as quick and easy as typing out a text message. Try it out, millions of people have had success. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. A healthy you is a happy you!

A New Smile for the New Year: You had to be expecting it, but a good dental hygiene and a beautiful new smile is a scientifically proven confidence booster for everyone, and confidence is attractive to everyone. From all of my firsthand experience, I have had numerous instances where I’ve seen a cosmetic dentistry patient’s face light up, almost glowing, after significantly improving their smiles. Image isn’t everything of course, but as the saying goes: “first impressions always count.” A beautiful white smile can be a very big part of a first impression. Many of my patients’ smiles have opened up considerably since treatment, and that little difference can have a big impact on those first impressions.

Quit Smoking: Smoking is bad for you, you should know this by now. You might have tried to quit several times, but the significance of the new year is a great way to change your perspective in making a new you for the new year! Not only can smoking lead to lung cancer and emphysema, your smile and your mouth take severe damage from repeated exposure to smoke. If you go with quitting smoking and a new smile, you can really kill two birds with the same stone and use each resolution to keep another resolution – it’s like a web of resolutions. Spiderman would be proud, I would be proud, your family would be proud, and you will be proud, so do it!

What kind of resolutions have you made this year to help better yourself for a new year? Tell me all about it on Twitter @DrBillDorfman #newyou. If a smile makeover is on your to do list for 2013, call my cosmetic dental practice today to schedule a consultation.

Smile Perfection in Century City

Cosmetic Dentistry Century City

The most difficult part of attaining perfection is finding something to do for an encore. -Author Unknown

We are perfectionists at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry where we create perfect smiles for our cosmetic dental and smile makeover patients.

Here are some of the cosmetic dental procedures we use in smile makeovers at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry in Century City.

Implant Dentistry
Dental implants are the ultimate tooth restoration available in Century City or anywhere else, for that matter. A tooth implant consists of a metal post that is inserted into your jawbone. The post replaces the root of the missing tooth.

After a few months, it meshes with your jawbone to provide the strength and integrity of a natural tooth. A base and natural-looking dental crown is permanently attached to the post. For most Century City patients with missing teeth, it is the preferred restoration. Implants can also be used to attach dentures and partial dentures for no-slip implant/denture combos.

Crowns
A mainstay of Century City cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns are more beautiful than ever. New fabrication technologies and materials have improved the aesthetics and strength of this restorative option.

Veneers
A veneer is a more conservative treatment than a full crown. This is a good choice for Century City patients whose teeth are structurally sound but have unsightly flaws such as discoloration, chips, cracks, or imperfect shape. Are you one of the many Century City teens or adults with dark tetracycline stains? Call us today at 877-703-7062 to say goodbye to tetracycline stains!

Inlays/Onlays
Inlays and onlays (indirect fillings) are designed and fabricated using dental CAD/CAM software. These fillings are strong, attractive, and precisely fitted to the cavity.

Tooth Whitening
Teeth bleaching is the crowning touch for a perfect smile. (It’s the only thing you need if you are a fortunate Century City man or woman with perfectly-shaped and aligned teeth.) No one has to live with dull or stained teeth. Call us today for a teeth whitening consultation at our Century City office.

Soft, Medium, or Buzz Lightyear?

Dental Hygiene Los Angeles At Century City Aesthetic Dentistry, Dr. Bill Dorfman is often asked how to choose the most basic tool of oral hygiene, the toothbrush. Picking a toothbrush in Los Angeles can be as difficult as choosing a paint color, and there seems to be just as many choices.

If you have visited the dental section of your local Los Angeles grocery store or Walmart lately, you know what I am talking about. There are brushes with bristles of varying lengths, brushes that massage your gums, and brushes that change color when they are used up. (If I had to rate them purely on their fun factor, I would choose the Spiderman brush.)

Some toothbrush manufacturers claim their brushes give you fresh breath or remove stains from your teeth. How do you choose?

One key factor is the firmness of the bristles. Hard bristles may be more effective for cleaning burnt steak off a grill or hard water deposits off a shower floor. However, this does not hold true for your teeth. Medium and firm brushes can damage your gums. Soft and extra-soft bristles are plenty stiff enough to clean plague, food particles, and surface stains from your teeth. Soft bristles also offer more flexibility for hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

After having cosmetic dental work or oral surgery in Los Angeles, especially anything involving soft tissue grafts, make sure you use an extra-soft brush and be careful!

When buying a toothbrush for a child in Los Angeles, make sure the brush feels comfortable in their hand. If the size and angle feels awkward, the child will be less likely to use it long enough to clean all areas of the mouth. Children do not necessarily need a child-sized tooth brush. Some kids can manage an adult size brush better than a short, narrow child size brush. If you are unsure, ask your Los Angeles dentist at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry.

What about the electric types and water-shooters? Some Los Angeles folks like the feeling of vibrating bristles or a mini-squirt gun blasting away at the plaque. People with arthritis or other movement-inhibiting conditions can benefit from powered brushes which take some strain off hands and arm muscles.

Is your toothbrush doing the job? Schedule an exam with your Los Angeles dentist at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry.

At Century City Aesthetic Dentistry, our professional and aware dental hygienists instruct our Los Angeles patients on proper brushing and flossing. If you haven’t experienced a dental deep cleaning at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry, you don’t know how clean your teeth and gums can feel.

Schedule a thorough dental cleaning today by calling Century City Aesthetic Dentistry at 877-703-7062. An outstanding feature of Century City Aesthetic Dentistry is own in house lab. We offer professional teeth whitening and a full spectrum of restorative dental procedures.

Beware Of An Acidic Diet In Beverly Hills

Dental Health Beverly Hills

Most Beverly Hills folks don’t often think of a tooth as a body part that fluctuates in strength. Our teeth seem to have a steady hardness and dependably grind food whenever we need them. However, teeth are dynamic organisms with chemical processes that occur continually.

The protective enamel that covers the softer interior is made of minerals. Enamel demineralizes (loses some of its density) when coming in contact with acids. Saliva can dilute and neutralize acid so the tooth can remineralize (re-harden). This process isn’t instantaneous, however. While the enamel is soft, the tooth is vulnerable to losing a microscopic outer layer of enamel. If the erosion continues, the much softer dentin is exposed. Eventually, the tooth may need to be extracted.

At Century City Aesthetic Dentistry, Beverly Hills dentist Dr. Bill Dorfman is noticing an increase in cases of serious acid erosion. It is apparent that the typical Beverly Hills diet is becoming more acidic.

The list of acidic foods may surprise you. They include eggs, gravy, asparagus, chicken, cottage cheese, honey, fish, ham, butter, sour cream, aged cheese, and yogurt with active cultures. Generally, food with a high sugar or artificial sweetener content are highly acidic.

Now let’s talk about drinks. You probably already know that soda pop and wine are not good for your teeth. Beverly Hills teens that sip soda all day can have acid erosion while their young teeth should be at their strongest. In addition to soda, energy drinks are very popular in Beverly Hills cosmetic dental professionals are noticing the effects on their dental patients’ tooth enamel.

If you drink soda or energy drinks often, you may want to drink water or chew sugarless gum after downing a can. Stimulating saliva production can speed up the remineralization process.

If your teeth have become more sensitive in general, or in response to hot or cold foods or beverages, you may have acid erosion. To schedule an examination with Dr. Bill Dorfman at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry, call 877-703-7062 today.

We are a full-service dental office with hundreds of satisfied clients in Beverly Hills. We are located at 2080 Century Park E Ste 1601, Los Angeles CA. We are working to raise awareness of the oral health dangers of acid erosion. We hope you have benefited from this Century City Aesthetic Dentistry blog article and look forward to your visit.

Affordable Teeth Whitening?

Home Whitening Beverly Hills If you are like most Beverly Hills web users, you have probably seen the multitude of ads for ‘free teeth whitening kits’.

Some show a ‘real Beverly Hills mom’ who discovered a ‘tooth whitening secret’. Others assure you that their system is the one that ‘your dentists don’t want you to know about’. Many contain a link to a page that contains a convincing tooth whitening testimonial. They bolster their legitimacy by aligning themselves with respected companies such as CNN, USA Today and Forbes.

Unfortunately, most of these are rip-offs. In a recent article, the Better Business Bureau explains the scam:

The countless Web sites for various teeth whitening products claim to offer a no-risk, money back guarantee, free trial of the product. To sign up, customers must provide a credit or debit card number to cover shipping. Complainants to BBB state that they are billed before their trial ends and continue to be billed after they have told the company they want to cancel.

Complainants also may find mystery charges for other companies and services that they didn’t realize they were signing up for with their ‘free’ trial.

The BBB has received complaints about the following company/product names:

  • Dazzle White
  • White Smile
  • Teeth Smile
  • Dazzle Smile
  • Ivory White
  • Max White
  • My Whitening
  • Gleaming White Smile
  • Advanced Wellness Research

Don’t trust your smile to an internet scammer. Your Beverly Hills cosmetic dental office is the only place for safe teeth bleaching. You don’t want to take a chance with your credit card number or your tooth enamel! Call us at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry for advanced cosmetic dentistry and worry-free Zoom whitening. You can reach us at 877-703-7062.

How To Have Kissable Breath

Fresh Breath Century CityWhen getting up close and personal with someone, you don’t want to worry about your breath being anything less than fresh. It’s simple to have kissable breath every day if you follow our easy cosmetic dental tips and have the right tools.

Clinical research shows that 90% of bad breath originates on the surface of your tongue. Unfortunately, brushing your tongue with a toothbrush only moves around bad breath-causing bacteria called biofilm and spreads it to other parts of your mouth.

The solution? A tongue scraper! Sold in the toothbrush section of most Century City drugstores, a tongue scraper literally sweeps the bacteria out of your mouth. Daily tongue scraping is the best 5-10 seconds you can spend on your breath.

How to do it:

1. You can start with a tongue spray, such as the one made by BreathRx before scraping to maximize effectiveness. A tongue spray kills and loosens bacteria from the crevices on your tongue.

2.Move the scraper from the back of the tongue, where most foul-smelling bad breath bacteria live, toward the front of the mouth.

3. Rinse with water or an alcohol-free mouthwash.

And that’s it! Your loved ones and colleagues will thank you, and you might enjoy food more because tongue scraping is believed to heighten the sensitivity of taste buds. Make these steps a habit for fresh breath and optimal oral health!

A New Reason To Eat More Fish In Century City

Beverly Hills Family Dentists Hello Century City dental blog visitors, welcome to the Century City Aesthetic Dentistry blog. I am Dr. Bill Dorfman.

I came across an interesting dental health article on the Web MD Health News site the other day. The article is entitled ‘Fatty Fish, Nuts May Prevent Gum Disease.’ Author Jennifer Warner explains that a recent study links diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with a lower risk of periodontitis.

Gum disease is a common dental issue for many Century City folks. When gum tissue pulls away from a tooth, it forms a pocket. (You know what they say about Nature abhorring a vacuum.) This pocket is a warm, moist place for bacteria to flourish. If periodontitis goes untreated, the tooth and jaw bone are at risk. During dental examinations, I carefully measure gumline pockets and examine all teeth for gum disease.

“Researchers found that people whose diets were rich in PUFAs were as much as 30 percent less likely to have gum disease than those who ate little or none of this type of fat.”

Foods high in PUFAs include salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines, herring. Oils high in PUFAs include safflower oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and margarines made with the previously mentioned oils. Almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds are high PUFA nuts/seeds.

I don’t know many families in Century City that regularly eat mackerel and herring. Maybe some of us could benefit from becoming more adventurous when it comes to seafood.

The possible prevention of gum disease is not the only reason to eat high PUFA foods. These foods pack a nutritional punch and have myriad health benefits. The next time you are stocking up at the Century City Costco, you may want to add some salmon and walnuts to your list.

It is important to understand that diet alone will not treat or prevent gum disease, however it may be an additional tool for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

If you have not been to your Century City family dentist in a while, I urge you to schedule an examination and cleaning today. We are currently taking new Century City cosmetic dental clients at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry.

If you are interested in teeth whitening, smile makeovers, tooth-colored fillings or fresh breath treatment, call us today to schedule an appointment.
