Dental Tips 101: Back to Basics for the New Year

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

As the calendar resets itself for the New Year, I think it’s a great time to review basic dental care. Whether you’re a Los Angeles area resident who has recently had a cosmetic dental treatment that you want to maintain or simply want to take the best care of your teeth possible, the most important thing you can do is to keep a consistent, daily dental routine.

Here are my tips for proper teeth maintenance:

-Brush teeth regularly. Always use a soft brush. Even though you may think that a hard brush will do a better job, it doesn’t. In fact, hard brushes destroy teeth. Typically, manual users spend only 24-60 seconds brushing–that’s not enough! Use a manual toothbrush for three to five minutes. Or with a power brush like Sonicare (which is what I use), two minutes get the job done.

-Use a simple yet effective brushing technique:

1) Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle against your gums.

2) Rotate the brush gently in small, circular motions.

3) Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth on both the upper and lower arches.

4) Repeat on the inside and chewing surfaces of all teeth.

-Floss regularly. Watch me discuss how and why to floss properly on The Doctors TV show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52zQ0REyR0Y&list=UU9cD910PBI7upPIufL4N0zg&index=2&feature=plcp

-See your dentist regularly.

-For fresh breath, I recommend the BreathRx brush and floss, scrape and rinse regimen. After brushing, scrape the tongue with a BreathRx Tongue Scraper to remove bad breath-causing bacteria. Move it from the back of the tongue toward the front, sweeping bacteria out of the mouth. Rinse with water and an alcohol-free mouthwash like BreathRx.

Easy, right? It still amazes me how many people neglect these simple things, inviting a host of dental problems that could have been avoided.

Use these dental hygiene tips to get a fresh start to a Happy New Year!

Bad Breath Is No Fun For Century City Residents

Imagine you are starting a new job in Century City and meeting your new boss for the first time. Confidence is key to your success. As you reach out to shake the extended hand, your broad confident smile exposes rows of pearly white teeth. Yet when you open your mouth to exchange greetings, you worry about bad breath. Perhaps your breath is not as pleasant as you had hoped. Bad breath is a worry and possible embarrassment for many residents of Century City. Regular cosmetic dental checkups at Century City Aesthetic can help alleviate your concern over bad breath. We have been addressing bad breath since 1985.

The technical term for bad breath is halitosis. Many factors can cause or contribute to halitosis. One of these factors is the food you eat. Onions and garlic are both known for having a potent affect on your breath. Simply observing the foods you eat here in Century City can result in a change in your breath.

In most cases, bad breath originates in your mouth. Transient bad breath can be resolved through eating or brushing, and is a temporary condition usually associated with a dry mouth. Persistent bad breath can be a serious problem effecting as much as 25 percent of our Century City residents. Persistent bad breath can be caused by dry mouth, and is made worse when food is not cleared away properly.

Daily dental hygiene, like brushing and flossing, is a critical step in curing bad breath. Food particles can build up in your mouth and foster bacteria which can cause bad breath. This not only includes the food particles that may get stuck between your teeth, but also the food that collects around your gums or on your tongue. Brushing and flossing daily can help reduce the amount of food particles that stay in your mouth and cause bad breath. Regular visits to Dr. Bill Dorfman at Century City Aesthetic in Century City can also reduce or eliminate the progression of bad breath.

Other factors that can contribute to bad breath for Century City residents include dry mouth, tobacco use, and health concerns such as infections. Come visit Dr. Bill Dorfman DDS, located in Century City; we’ll provide you with information about bad breath in a professional environment. Give us a call at (877) 331-9291 to set up an appointment. When is the last time you had a dental checkup? Most people in the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills area between the ages of 20 and 90 need a dental checkup every six months. If you live in Los Angeles or Beverly Hills and are at higher risk for oral diseases, you should have your teeth checked every four months, or at least three times a year. Dental health is the foundation for a beautiful smile that will last.

Come into our office, located at 2080 Century Park East, Suite 1601 in Los Angeles, or give us a call to make a dental appointment. You can visit our website at http://www.billdorfmandds.com/ for more information.

Most people in our Los Angeles and Beverly Hills community are in a medium to low risk category. However if you use tobacco or alcohol, eat a lot of sugar in your diet (including lots of soda), or have poor dental hygiene habits, you are likely in a higher risk category and should have your teeth checked right away.

I look at a lot of factors to determine your personal dental hygiene, and your dental outlook for your future. I want you to have the healthiest smile possible so that you can enjoy your teeth for many years without significant problems.
